Marching Orders goes a long way in putting all of the stories I have read in better perspective. By reading the Japanese message

I have read numerous books on the conduct of World War II, including Eisenhower's Crusade in Europe and Miracle at Midway. Marching Orders goes a long way in putting all of the stories I have read in better perspective. By reading the Japanese messages through the breaking of their codes we knew so much more about what the Axis were thinking. The Japanese ambassador to Germany was conveying back to Japan what they were learning from the German High Command. It was just as if we had a spy in Hitler''s inner circle.
The U.S. kept secret the fact that we were reading the Japanese messages, even after the war ended. As a result we found out how some of our "allies" were being considerably two faced in their dealing with us after the war had ended. Also we learned how the Japanese, after the war, plotted to make the United States appear inhuman in the use of the atomic bomb, in spite of the fact that the Japanese military were steadfast in refusing to surrender in spite of the fact they knew they could not win. They were even willing to have all civilians fight to the death rather than surrender. Conventional bombing along with an invasion of Japan would have essentially destroyed the Japanese people.

When I was 10, in 1966, I asked my father about the war in the pacific. He was 18 while on Saipan. He talked how the Japanese would rather commit suicide rather than surrender. Of the 32,000 Japanese soldiers on the island his outfit took 17 prisoners. Then he went on to Okinawa for 45 days including the battle of Shuri Castle, the first time in over a thousand years an enemy set foot on Japanese soil. He saw the ferociousness and the willingness to die rather than surrender. They killed themselves by the thousand as surrender was so shameful. He was scheduled to be part of the second wave of the invasion of Japan about February of 1946. In a hanger of thousands of marines and as the Army was arriving from Europe, the General stated "look to the man next to you, He isn't coming home" and as my father looked to the left, a soldier was looking at him!
9 days after Nagasaki, My father arrived by ship for the occupation. He witnessed the fortifications and tunnels that were built on the beaches and hills for the defense of the island. Scholl girls taught to spear the soldier as he entered the beach. Looked like the defenses of Iwo Jima.
He emphasized without a doubt two reasons we was alive that day in 1966 because of two reasons
1 - The Atomic bombs were dropped (one was not enough)
2 - The Emperor of Japan made the deciding vote to surrender.
This statement is a FACT!
This book is a book of FACTS! The way it was.
Thank God this book is written to dispute the subtle changes in history as this generation passes on. When there are eye witnesses to dispute what is not the truth it must be said before those who were not part of it, born after the facts, change the way it was!

This is an excellent subject if handled properly

This is an excellent subject if handled properly, but, unfortunately, this book reads like a school book. If you want to know what the Magic messages were and when they were available, fine, the author gives you loads of decrypes of the Magic intercepts from the Japanese ambassador to the Axis powers in Berlin to Tokyo. I was not impressed. There are several other books that also cover Magic and Purple which are much better reading.
