In contrast to them, as inventors of "arbitrary forms."

When pressed, Hopper insists he does not paint American scenes (from which his works clearly are drawn). Rather he expresses his own emotional response to them. Asked what he was after, in his painting "Sun in an Empty Room." Simple answer, "I'm after me."

Five years of personal research assures the reader a thoughtful database of artist's-eye observations. Respectful treatment of Hopper's legacy in works and words and personal behavior. A careful integration of all three leads to the shocking categorical conclusion. In his art, Edward Hopper, American Realist, is neither. Not American, not Realist.

REVIEW
At last I have cleared my mind to attend to your remarkable piece of writing. Firstly congratulations. It is an insightful and contextually rich piece of work. You write with passion and understanding.

On the one hand it reads so well and with such poetic elements that I almost think of it as a basis for a script to be read by an actor. It certainly reads very well when read aloud. It could also be a well-crafted paper to be given at something like the College Art Association annual talk fest in New York.

Because it is such a visual piece, the images large on a screen in the traditionally darkened lecture hall, with the author somewhat demonically lit, to one side extracting things from a huge colour reproduction of "Gas" or "Nighthawks" would be very dramatic.

The footnotes are supportive, references wide-ranging and erudite, so perhaps it would be seen as a breath of fresh air.

However, art historians would, in all probability curl up their lips distastefully at what they'd see as the lack of documentary evidence. Well my generation of Courtauld students would.

But my guru and lecturer, Gombrich would not. He'd have enjoyed it, I'm sure. Especially as he was at work at Bletchley decoding German intercepts for MI6 at the time of the "Gas" and "Nighthawks" painting! But the stuffy ones would say, "Where are the Hopper diary entries or letters?" I would of course say, "So?"

Which is why I felt that all too often critics and especially academics attend to context, social history and of course documents and provenance. But never actually attend to or just visually consume the work. This of course is what practicing artists do.

I make these comments as my response to one of the most enjoyable pieces of art interpretive writing which I have read recently. Once read it colours all future thoughts on those two iconic Hoppers.

About the Author

Richard Wight, now retired, was a partner from 1985 to 2007 in the Global Finance Group of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP. Mr. White has extensive experience representing banks and other institutional investors in complex financing transactions, corporate restructurings and workouts, leveraged acquisitions, letters of credit, and tax-oriented financings.

Warren Cooke became a partner in the Global Finance Department of Milbank in 1980. His practice involves principally transactional work on behalf of U.S. and non-U.S. financial institutions and includes investment grade lending, leveraged finance, export and trade finance, project finance, structured finance, and debt restructuring.

Richard Gray has been a lawyer with Milbank since 1981 and a partner since 1990. He has twenty-five years of specialized experience in U.S. domestic and international financial transactions, in acquisition and other leveraged financings, workouts, project finance, securitizations, and other structured financings.

Great Primer

I am beginning to do banking work at my firm, and this book was an excellent primer with respect to credit agreements. While there were a few confusing sentences here and there, for the most part, the book was exceedingly clear and explicit in explaining the purpose and provenance of each of the terms in a standard credit agreement. It is also organized in a way that makes it useful as a reference guide. Highly recommended.

A good outline of a poorly documented subject

This book provides a good outline of a poorly documented subject. Most articles characterize the credit risk inherent in these loans, but do not describe payment or sales/trading characteristics. Contrast this with the literature available on bonds or mortgage securitization, which describe everything from underlying credit characteristics to trading operations and standards to research.
It amazes me that there is as much product variation as in this vehicle. The book is far from a primer -- it is more like a guide for paralegals. While it is not ideal for my use and doesn't cover many of the topics in which I'm interested, it is a single source of information on syndicated loan characteristics that seems to be found nowhere else.

Really great book. I work in the environment that deals a lot a lot of credit agreements because my clients focuses on US term loans. Very good reference guide. It's clear on all the terms that seem confusing to anybody who has a sufficient business background but poor on the law side.

Five Classic Detective Stories

The Novels of Dashiell Hammett

Dashiell Hammett left home in his teens to join the Pinkerton Detective Agency, a national police force. He joined the US Army in 1917 and suffered from TB (poor diet?). Unable to work again as a detective he began work in advertising, then wrote short stories for the magazines that provided entertainment and education about events not found in most small towns. He wrote these five novels during the Great Depression (1926-1941?) to support his wife and child. Hollywood filmed “The Maltese Falcon” in 1931 and “The Thin Man” series in the 1930s-1940s. Hammett rejoined the US Army in 1942 and served in Alaska. After the war he got in trouble for his politics, and was sent to prison for refusing to name the contributors to the Civil Rights Congress. His books were blacklisted from the 1950s to the 1970s.

All of these novels are good, but some are better (your opinion may vary). They provide a view of life before the 1940s. Trolleys mostly died out in the Great Depression. Their costs made them uncompetitive to buses, which did not require the higher costs of railroad tracks and the taxes that went with them. Hammett’s hiring by Hollywood (and other distractions) ended his novels. You may compare them to Raymond Chandler’s novels. Chandler had been an accountant (an eye for details) and a company executive before the Great Depression. I wonder if the current “Great Recession” will generate similar novels? Today, the big money is in television shows (which are more transient than novels). Richard Layman wrote a biography of Hammett. Both Hammett and Chandler worked in the movie business, this restricted their literary output. Erle Stanley Gardner didn’t like what Hollywood did to his novels, so he stayed away and continued writing his famous “Perry Mason” novels about an invincible advocate.

“Red Harvest” (1929) tells about the search for the murderer of a newspaper publisher’s son. The Continental Operative cleans up “Personville” by getting the two gangs that control this city to fight against each other. [This seems to be an enlarged version of his short story “Corkscrew”.]

“The Dain Curse” (1929) begins when a detective appears to trace missing diamonds. It tells about the Dain family and their daughter Gabrielle. Is she involved with a religious cult? What about drugs? Could any family have a curse on its members?

“The Maltese Falcon” (1930) is about the search for wealth from acquiring an item of great value that is hidden as an ordinary statuette. It reveals the amoral lives of those who seek unearned riches. Do these things still go on?

“The Glass Key” (1931) tells about the search for the murderer of a Senator’s son. It is about seeking political power, which results in wealth (and vice-versa). Could a wealthy man use his son and daughter to keep political power?

“The Thin Man” (1934) is about the search for a missing man by a detective who married a wealthy heiress and retired. It documents the lives of people in that era by its background facts. [This led to a popular series of movies from the 1930s and a TV show in the 1950s.]

The feel of an Upanishad

Eckhart Tolle's second book has been awaited for a while by those who found the wisdom and grace of the first to be an extraordinary experience. This book is smaller on content and perhaps more complex in profundity. The Power of Now operated at all levels; it was one of those rare books which could actually get people to begin a spiritual practice with some seriousness, while those already in the swim found it to be a valuable guide. Stillness Speaks tilts a bit towards the already serious spiritual practitioner. Not that a beginner would not profit from it but my guess is that people who have done their processes and transformed themselves are likely to extract the most from this tight little spiritual classic.
Stillness Speaks has some of the feel of an Upanishad. A master discourses on important spiritual issues and you access the level you are capable of. When you come back to it, you find that the book has changed too, speaking to you at a depth you might not have suspected even existed - in you! Tolle is evolving towards an aphoristic style of communication; anything longer would tend to be false to the essence of being in the Now which is his difficult/simple message. It is a book that triggers rumination in you even more powerfully than The Power of Now. My personal favorite, something that set off a liberating snort of laughter, is the conclusion to Chapter Six -"Leave Life alone. Let it be."
I feel that not learning from this book would be a blunder.

Words that point beyond words

The fact that this book stirs up controversy speaks of its real power, and the power of any teaching that goes beyond the narrow range of our human expectations.

In the Introduction, Tolle says, "If you come to a spiritual teacher - or this book - looking for stimulating ideas, theories, beliefs, intellectual discussions, then you will be disappointed. In other words, if you are looking for food for thought, you won't find it, and you will miss the very essence of the teaching, the essence of this book, which is not in the words but within yourself."

And later, "Allow the book to do its work, to awaken you from the old grooves of your repetitive and conditioned thinking."

"This book, of course, uses words.... the thoughts within this book don't say 'Look at me.' but 'Look beyond me.' Because the thoughts came out of stillness, they have power -- the power to take you back into the same stillness from which they arose."

NOT A BOOK. AN AMAZING AND UNIQUE "THING"!!!!

I'm a fan of Tolle - I consider his previous book a masterpiece. In my humble opinion, It's the best rendering of unitary/enlightened/samadhi consciousness humanity could ever hope for.

When I started reading this book I became irritated at first. Again with the repetitions? Wasn't the theory explained already? Until I let myself go and tried to accept what Tolle is trying to do.

THIS IS NOT A BOOK IN THE ORDINARY SENSE!!! Tolle is explicitly stating the reader should spend more time experiencing the content than reading (careful: thinking is not experiencing). I was wrong to dismiss this instruction and when I did figure it out I was BLOWN AWAY.

I can't believe Tolle has actually managed to top himself. While "The Power of Now" is where you should start, this book is a perfect follow-up. A profound METHOD (not really a BOOK in the classic sense) to stir the profound and by all accounts EXTREMELY COOL form of existence you could be having, hidden from you by experiencing existence as a continuous stream of thought and by the involuntary and habitual identification with that stream ("thought-identification"). Although difficult to do in everyday life, the basic truth in the thought dis-identification premise is easy to verify in meditation: even as a beginner, your thoughts go away for all of 2 seconds yet you are still you. So you are in fact THE AWARENESS THAT EXPERIENCES THOUGHT. Get it?

So this "book" goes over from theory and touches the actual practice. But meditation still seems to be the effective way for calming down, combined with the lifestyle additions that support it by reducing stress in our nervous system: trigger point therapy followed by a steady yoga practice (trigger points are best explained in "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook" - you wouldn't believe the amount of pain in your body of which you are not aware! unlikely you are brave enough to work it out by yourself, so give the book to a massage therapist!), and a diet as free of stimulatnts as possible: nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, garlic, aerated drinks etc.

Although most yoga teachers are unaware of it, the deepest yogic meditative state of Samadhi meditation - letting go of thoughts WITHOUT concetrating on an object as in "ordinary" yogic meditation - can be learned directly, without 20+ years of yoga practice. It's easy to learn, but you need to practice for a few months for the full effect. Example: [...] (mostly India-based org, courses in English are conducted in Pune, near Bombay).

(note: Samadhi consciousness, or the consciousness component in enlightenment, is the result of the continuous practice of Samadhi meditation)

I just started reading romance novels again, and this is a good collection of stories. I read them so fast, the bundles are a great buy for me. Love the kindle.... Would like to be able to flip back and forth between books easier, but that's difficult with the kindle. That's not the book's fault, though.
