Okay but not not what I expected

I am generally a fan of Judy Duarte's and really love the Fortune series, but I was a little taken a back by this particular book. The heroine in the book was frankly too snobbish for me. I understand her wanting to seek out a man who would be a good mach for the woman she wanted to be, but she never gave JR, the hero, the chance to really show her who he was.

The character spent the majority of the book putting words in JRs mouth and never taking into consideration that he said in the beginning that he hired her because he like her dedication to her art and her heritage. How he wanted her to redesign his house in that manner. Instead the character, Isabella, constantly went on about how she refused to make the Kitchen too modern, albeit to herself, because it wasn't historically pleasing to herself. Not thinking that someone who lived in the house would want modern fixtures. She did the same on other issues in the house, even if JR didn't say one way or the other how he felt.

I am all for characters who have issues in their past to work out and characters who may feel that rich men are spoiled and get bored easily, but after three quarters of the way into the book and the lead hero hasn't done anything that would prove her thoughts, it is long since time to let it go and move on with the plot.

Otherwise, I liked JR's character and the continuation of the mystery into the Fortune and Mendoza's current mystery. For those keeping up with the series, that's is the important reason to read this book and stay current with the series mystery.

Real cowboy or not, he's a keeper

Isabella Mendoza has a list. On it are all the requirements she has for a man she might consider marrying. William "J.R." Fortune doesn't meet any of them. Isabella wants somebody down to earth, with a steady job. Someone who's not afraid of commitment. At the age of forty, J.R. suddenly gave up a successful, lucrative city career in order to buy a ranch and become a "real" cowboy - not exactly evidence of sensible maturity. Or commitment. He does have a good sense of humor (on her list), he's sensitive, caring (also on the list) and he's handsome (not on the list, but she can't help but notice).

The main problems Isabella sees are that 1) J.R. isn't Latino so he can't possibly understand how important her heritage is to her, and 2) J.R. is stubborn and manipulative. Isabella's stepfather was that way, insisting she give up her Tejana culture and language. Now that she's no longer under his control, she certainly doesn't want to surrender to someone just like him.

But J.R. knows what he wants - and it's the beautiful Latina he's hired to decorate his historic ranchhouse. He's persistent, especially when he senses that Isabella is attracted to him, too. Escalating danger for the Mendoza family, J.R.'s concern for her safety, Isabella's racing heart whenever she's near J.R., and a sweet little dog who loves them both - all conspire to make Isabella re-think her list. She was looking for a real, live cowboy. Could J.R. be the real thing?

We've all fallen, at one time or another, for the wrong man. Judy Duarte's book reminds us of the turmoil and passion that go along with making hard choices. Isabella thinks she knows all the reasons she shouldn't fall for J.R., but under Duarte's expert crafting, she comes to know her heart a little better - and we all cheer her decision to embrace a happy ever after ending.

This was a sweet and honest read about a man who found someone he wanted to have a real honest relationship with and a woman who was still learning who she wanted in a man and was not ready to admit she had found the perfect man in the hero. This is one book I will be rereading many times! Loved it!

Welcome to the world where dragons are real and magic works. If you are new to the Dragon Nimbus, pull up a chair and join us as we revel in tales that have touched my heart more than anything else I've written under any pen name. If you are returning after an absence, I am very happy to have you back.

This is a world that began with a Christmas gift of a blown-glass dragon. The dragon sat proudly on the knick-knack shelf for several months, loved and admired, reluctantly dusted, and totally inert. Then one night at dinner, my son remarked, "You know, Mom, I think dragons are born all dark, like that little pewter dragon, then they get more silvery as they grow up until they are as clear as glass." The dragon came to life for me.

Out of that chance remark came first one book, then three, five, seven, and finally ten. I built a career on these books and loved every minute of the process. These characters still live in my mind many years after they jumped into their stories and dragged me along with them.

Many thanks to DAW Books and my editor Sheila Gilbert for reviving The Dragon Nimbus a lucky thirteen years after they first debuted.

WOW...I was lost most of the book

There was too large a gap from the last book. Nothing was tied together and too many lives left undone. Tried to tie another world to the book....marginally successful. There was soo much more to be learned about the characters in the first volume that we never knew. I thought they would be tied better together with the second volume in the third. Nope. I had to read it though...thinking it would get better...

This is a view of the Separatist Puritans and the Strangers (non-Puritans) who came on the Mayflower that few of us have ever read in our history books. There is no time to develop their story as Thomas Fleming does with excellent historical sources throughout. He is such a good writer--almost too good since he evokes the reality of their suffering and their plight so vividly that you almost need to take breaks. It held my attention from beginning to end. I am a high school history teacher with four degrees but I learned so much in this book. If you have any interest in American history at all, you have to enjoy this book. It is a real testimony to the people who came in that famous ship. It gives a lot of insight to the Indian tribes of the area and some of the famous names we have heard before. I liked it even better than Tempest at Dawn by James Best and that is another good one.

A well written book that depicts what the voyagers on the Mayflower experienced prior to sailing, during their voyage and, especially, the early days in the New World once they got here - this would be an excellent study for students of American history
