Seven Decades in Science Fiction

Raymond Gallun (rhymes with "balloon") was a vastly underrated science fiction writer, with a career that spanned nearly seven decades-- he published his first SF magazine story in 1929, was very active in the pulps until 1943 and then again from 1949-1954, and then returned to the field in the 1970s, publishing his last novel in 1985.
If Gallun is remembered at all today, it's for his 1934 novelette "Old Faithful," the first SF story to feature an alien as a protagonist. This anthology doesn't include "Old Faithful" (it is separately available on the Kindle as The Old Faithful Saga: The Classic SF Trilogy), but this e-book does feature a lot of Gallun's other works, from all phases of his career-- seven novelettes and two short stories, published between 1935 and 1980, many of them never reprinted before. Not all of the works are equally good, but all of them are readable and many of them are excellent; overall, this anthology shows that Gallun was a writer who should be better remembered than he is. (One caveat: this Kindle anthology is mostly free of typos, but has no working table of contents.)
The novelette "Davy Jones, Ambassador" is the earliest work in this collection-- it was published in 1935 in Astounding Stories. It is a pulp adventure story, like most SF of the era, but it is still a fun read. Gallun takes a common SF trope-- a human explorer captured by intelligent but potentially malign aliens-- and gives it a new twist by setting it on the ocean floor rather than in outer space. Gallun's inventiveness is already evident in this story (the aliens and their technologies are well thought out), as is his "liberalism" -- in this story, as in much of his later work, humans and aliens start out suspicious of each other but eventually learn to cooperate peacefully. "Forbidden Moon" (novelette, Planet Stories, 1941) is another piece of pulp adventure, somewhat dated but still readable because of its creative plot twists.
"Hotel Cosmos," a short story from Astounding in 1938, is a rather simple piece of interplanetary adventure, albeit with some original ideas (it is set in a hotel in Chicago which caters to extraterrestial visitors). The novelette "Seeds of the Dusk," on the other hand, although also published in Astounding in 1938, is decades ahead of its time; set in the far future, its main characters are sentient seed pods which drift through space and try to gain a foothold on the dying earth. This is a truly great story, one which presages the pessimism and ambiguity of SF's 1960s New Wave.
The 1950s stories again show Gallun alternating between inventive pulp fiction and and more substantial fare. "Comet's Burial" (short story, Science Fiction Stories, 1953) and "Brother Worlds" (novelette, Thrilling Wonder, 1951) are exciting space adventures, not classics but entertaining stories with some original ideas. "Prodigal's Aura" (novellete, Astounding, 1951) is a very different kind of story, and one that I'm surprised was published by John Campbell; it is more of a character study than an SF adventure, and is best described as "gentle" and "pastoral," two words I wouldn't use for most of 1950s science fiction. It is about the conflicts between a stolid midwestern farmer and his visiting brother-in-law, a ne'er-do-well spaceman on leave on earth. The conflicts threaten to erupt into real trouble, but Gallun once again has everyone reason together and work things out.
"Stamped Caution," a novelette published in Galaxy in 1953, is one of the better first-contact stories of the era. Gallun very plausibly describes the investigation of the wreckage of a flying saucer which crashes on earth and how that investigation eventually leads to humans' first contact with an alien and first visit to an inhabited planet. Here again, Gallun's characters, both human and alien, start out very suspicious of each other but eventually overcome their wariness and find common ground.
Gallun's plausibility in describing the scientific investigation of alien life, and his abiding faith in the ability of intelligent life forms to live in peace despite initial fears and suspicions, also characterize the latest work in this collection, his 1980 novelette "A First Glimpse" (published in Analog, and nominated for a Nebula award). Gallun's writing style is at its most mature here, and the story is filled with a sense of wonder-- not all that much actually happens in the way of plot, but the narrator effectively communicates his sense that even a glimpse of an alien visitor is the most momentous event in human history. Highly recommended.

One of the best lost authors of SF.

Stories are written in the 20's and 30's before all of our scientific discoveries. But if you love the old Space Opera this is a great book of short stories. Gallun along with Hamilton and Weinbaum set the tone for many of the great authors that followed. One of my favorite authors from the early days of SF!

This is a good collection of stories. Well writen and fairly uncommon for the time. Only 4 stars due to a large number of typos. Otherwise, it is well worth the purchase. (Kindle version reviewed)
