About the Author
About the Editor Bimal K. Bose currently holds the Condra Chair of Excellence in Power Electronics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he has been responsible for organizing the power electronics teaching and research program since 1987. Dr. Bose has published more than 125 papers and holds 18 U.S. patents. He is the author of the best-seller Modern Power Electronics (1992), Microcomputer Control of Power Electronics and Drives (1987), and Power Electronics and AC Drives (1986), and editor of Adjustable Speed AC Drive Systems (1981). Dr. Bose is also the Distinguished Scientist of Power Electronics Applications Center, Knoxville, Tennessee; Honorary Professor of Shanghai University, China; and Senior Advisor of the Beijing Power Electronics Research and Development Center, China. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE, has held numerous leadership positions in IEEE and its societies, and has won several IEEE awards for outstanding achievements in the field of power electronics including the IAS Outstanding Achievement Award, IES Eugene Mittelmann Award, Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award, and the Lamme Gold Medal.

Little more than a Powerpoint presentation about the subject.

I bought the book based on the good reviews (too few, although all good, I see now), and that's what I received:
The book is constructed by using half page to show bullet-points in the style of a Powerpoint presentation, using big characters or thick-line diagrams, and below it, a paragraph with some explanations about the subject.
Unfortunately, the whole book is like this (by the way, the quality of graphics is extremely low). So, it becames really hard to read and follow the contents.
Anyway, the contents are very superficial, just generalities: do not expect to be able to design a converter, or be able to choose one, even after the huge effort of reading through it.
Please, realize that non-mathematical treatment means, in this case: non applicable, non rigorous. I should have distrusted the "non-mathematical" feature: engineers, or engineering students are supposed to be able to deal with mathematical treatments...aren't we?
There are for sure better books on Power Electronics (or just books, not a commented powerpoint, like this one).
Don't throw away your money by buying this. I don't know other books of the author, but this one is really disgusting, a full deception, feel cheated on my money...

POWER ELECTRONICS AND MOTOR DRIVES - ADVANCES AND TRENDS

It is such a pleasure to review the book POWER ELECTRONICS AND MOTOR DRIVES - ADVANCES AND TRENDS by Prof. Bimal Bose of the University of Tennessee. Prof. Bose has authored/edited large number (altogether seven) of books in power electronics and motor drives area which have been very popular, but this book is somewhat unique. It treats all the modern and advanced topics of power electronics (including fuzzy logic and neural networks) in integrated manner. Besides the main subject discussed in Chapters 2-11, Chapter 1 gives introduction and perspective of power electronics, and Chapter 12 discusses some questions and answers. Many example applications on converters and drives make the book very interesting.

There is no such book available in the market. The simple descriptive and non-mathematical presentation style format of the book makes the book easy to understand by professional engineers and graduate students. A CD with the PowerPoint presentation file of all the figures is included at the end, which can be used selectively for any seminar presentation on the subject.

Excellent reading

The latest book by Bimal Bose on `Power Electronics and Motor Drives' is very helpful to all practicing power electronics engineers. The book provides very useful information about the practical aspect of power electronics application. The book covers almost all aspect of power electronics including time tested thyristor converter to the latest control and converter technology in power electronics like multi-level converter, neural/fuzzy control and DSP application. It also gives useful information about application of power electronics in the area of Electric/hybrid vehicle, integration of fuel cell with power electronics, etc. The book also provides various information on motor controls and their application in the vast area of ac/dc drives. The book gives lot of information in its last chapter. The particular chapter is formatted in question-answer mode and provides past, present and future of power electronics technology including its multi disciplinary application with respect to the other emerging fields. The book is presented in unique power point format. The book is a very useful tool guide to people like me, who use power electronics in their regular professional life.

Learned a new way to study

Studying to be a nurse and teaching nurses are two different things. Actually, teaching nurses is even harder because you have to know all of the things nurses know and you have to know how to teach. I've taken enough classes that I felt like I knew how to study. However, for this particular certification exam, I wanted to make sure I had the information down really well and I was looking for a new way to learn it. Not only so I could learn it myself, but so I could possibly teacher future nurses my method as well. I looked online and found lots of flash cards for nurses, but when I saw these cards, I was thrilled. These flash cards were specifically for the test I was going to take! I thought that was pretty neat so I ordered them right away. When I got them, I was really impressed. They were just what I needed because they had all the information on them I needed to learn and they were easy to carry around. I now recommend flash cards for my nurses because these cards worked so well for me. IT was a new way for me to study, but I sure wish I had come up with it before!

I found these cards very helpful to use after I had read the CNE review and other books recommended on the NLN reference list. I used these cards to test what I retained from reading. I'm passing mine onto a fellow faculty member. Additionally, I found taking the practice exam online was also a good prep.

VERY USEFUL TOOL

These flashcards are composed of important things that one should remember when taking the certified nurse educator exam. The author was able to condense the topics so that they would be easy for the reader to understand and remember. This is very useful because it is informative and can be used anywhere you go. Flashcards are also effective way of learning and remembering things. It helps the reader not only to understand the concept but also to retain those concepts or topics in mind of the reader. They provide knowledge that is useful when taking the exam. It is a great deal as well because it's more than worthy of its price and content. It makes the topic simple to understand and the answers to the questions are all direct and to the point. It gives you what you need.

Flashcards are also fun to have because you can read and review it with others and you can also play games using it. You can ask each other and have a group discussion regarding each topic. That way each and everyone of you will have a clear grasp of knowledge at hand. Nice integration of suspense and mystery

When a grad student discovers cancer-eating microbes in a long-buried cave beneath the Texas hill country, claustrophobic scientist Maxine O'Neil is sent to investigate. If the microbes can be used to create a cure for cancer, her company will be rich and the world will benefit. Unfortunately, other companies profit from the status quo and aren't willing to let her do her work in peace.

Zach Douglas loves caving and wants nothing more than to be left alone to explore the cave he discovered. When a drug company leases the land on which the cave is located, he reluctantly agrees to serve as a guide to the team of scientists, but he knows better than to trust drug companies--after all, a drug company was behind his sister's murder. But when sexy scientist Max O'Neil runs into trouble, Zach finds himself doing more than guiding--he's protecting as well, and it doesn't take long before he wants to do more than protect.

Author Kay Thomas weaves together the romance and suspense angles of her story, keeping the reader engaged as Max and Zach deal with their own issues, forcing each other to grow past their fears to earn a chance at each other. Of course, there is the small matter of surviving the ruthless assassin who is intent on killing them and on destroying the priceless microbes that might spell an end to the curse of cancer.

Kay Thomas's Bulletproof Texas, was very riveting. On the edge of your seat...
I could relate to Dr. Maxine O'Neil's fear of closed in places and her fear of heights.This is the second of her books that I have read. The other one, Better than Bulletproof was also one that I just couldn't put down..

A treat for musical theatre lovers

Kander and Ebb's autobiography Colored Lights, while a fine glimpse into their creative process, is not nearly as informative and interesting as this book. Thoroughly analyzing and covering their work for the theatre and creating unique portraits of each man (Kander being the warm, loving one and Ebb being acerbic and brash), this is a must read for musical theatre lovers!

Kander and Ebb book a bust

When I purchased this book, I thought it would be more about the lives of the composers; more of their background, their experiences in greater detail, stories that told of their interaction with the directors and actors in their shows. Instead, this book reads like a music theory text-book; modalities, raising and lowering of scale degrees, vamp examples, etc. It took a lot of self-motivation to get from cover to cover. And the spelling errors and typos are too many to mention. Shame on the editors! Wait for a better book to come along about this fascinating team.

Well-written, well-researched and revelatory in many ways. This book is a necessity for anyone interested in Musical Theatre. A perfect example of how to examine a Musical Theatre writer's career (in this case writers'). One of the very best books I have read on Musical Theatre.
