Northrop was an aviation genius who was more interested in developing new technology than selling airplanes or making a fortune. The Northrop story is the story of American aviation history; he worked with the Loughead brothers (who changed their name to Lockheed) and Donald Douglas, designing some of America's greatest airplanes from the Vega to the DC-3 and ultimately to the most controversial of all, the flying wing. He also helped redesign the Spirit of St. Louis, lopping off weight and making it possible for Charles Lindbergh to successfully solo the Atlantic. Northrop developed the revolutionary flying wing, a plane without a fuselage. The U.S. Army gave him a contract to build 30 craft. But when Air Force Secretary Stuart Symington assumed office he ordered the cancellation of Northrop's contract. He also ordered the destruction of all the flying wings in production--presumably to recover components though the cost of destruction was infinitely greater than the value of recovered components. Conspiracy theories abounded. The destruction of his beloved flying wing was a metaphor for Northrop's career--it ended sadly and prematurely. However, he lived just long enough to learn about the development of the Air Force's stealth B-2 bomber, a flying wing bearing a remarkable similarity to his vision. Don't buy!

Don't pay for this! I expected a book about Northrop and the development of an interesting aviation concept. It's actually just a superficial overview that appears to come from a magazine. The ridiculously short article says very little about Jack Northrop and even less about his flying wing. Incidentally, the idea was probably not even originally Northrop's. Not worth even 3.49 Zimbabwe dollars, let alone USD 3.49.

I was intrigued by Jacks start in Aviation worked for Malcolm Loughead built Seaplanes he designed F-1 a ten passenger flying boat before ww1 Flying Boats after the was designed S-1 sport plain a biplane an advanced craft but too expensive with all the used Jenny’s around. Loughead Aircraft folded in 1920 he joined Donald Douglas in 1923 one of only two engineers at the time. Northrop wanted to develop innovations in air planes but Douglas was happy with his hot selling planes and he left seeking out the Loughead brothers who he joined the new company was called “Lockheed Aircraft” the Vega was born breaking all speed records the success of the design brought the same problem he had with Douglas Allen Loughead wanted to focus on the Vega while Northrop wanted to design new planes. He took some time off and helped Claude Ryan design the Spirit of St Louis. He left Lockheed and started Avion Corp. developing new plains for TWA his plains were selling as fast as they could be built. William Boeing took notice and acquired the company through his parent company United Aircraft the Great Depression struck and Northrop withdrew from the company it was 51 percent owned by Douglas so was essentially a Douglas subsidiary. Douglas used Jacks skills to produce the famed DC-2 and DC-3s Ultimately Douglas acquired Northrop’s interest and he formed his fourth company Northrop Aircraft Co. WW2 was on the horizon the company was successful producing sea plans for Norway, Vengeance dive bombers for Britain and cowlings for Boeing. His secret to the war effort was the development and production of the P-61 Black Widow. Jacks real interest was developing the Flying Wing first version flew in July 1940 the N-1M, He proposed a 172 foot wing span version to the Army however they requested a smaller version a third the size the smaller model was N-9M and flew from Hawthorne in December 1942. The first full size flew in June 1946 after the war from Hawthorne to Muroc Army Air Base by test pilot Glen Edwards. He died testing the plane XB-35 and the base was renamed Edwards in his honor. A Honeywell autopilot and turbojets replaced the original piston engines and it became the YB-49. The YB-49 was up against Consolidated Voltee’s B-36 Superfortress. General Joseph McNarney presented Northrop a contract for 30 Flying Wings the RB-49 planes however the axe fell when the new Secretary of the Air Force Stuart Symington and Floyd Odium principal shareholder of Consolided Vultee met with Northrop and asked him to combine Northrop with Consolidated. Odium demanded majority shares and control of Northrop this was unacceptable and resulted in the Air Force cancelling the RB-49 contract. The eleven planes nearing completion were ordered destroyed. Northrop was heartbroken and dispirited. Little was said about the $100,000 Odium contributed to Symington’s campaign. Thirty years later in 1980 Jack Northrop was invited to see plans for the super-secret Stealth Bomber the B-2 With tears in his eyes Northrop said “Now I know why God kept me alive for the last 25 years” The B-2 is a flying wing and its wing span is exactly 172 feet the same as the RB-49.
