life and times vol. 1 only

The author did copious research for this book. i have learned so many things that i had never considered before concerning the culture of the time of Jesus on this earth:
1. there was a strong Greek influence in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus and that their philosophical reasoning greatly affected the rabbinic society and therefore the scriptures were interpreted in two ways--the original way which was in a more literal sense allowing scripture to explain itself and then the hellenistic approach which sought a deeper allegorical way of interpretation which led to a more opinionated interpretation.
2.The rabbinic ideal of the reason for a coming Messiah was completely contrary to what Jesus the Messiah actually came for, hence the Jews did not recognize Jesus as the True Messiah because He didn't fulfill their ideals of one. Jesus said that I come to seek and save the lost, He came in peace.
The Jews were looking for a Nationalistic Messiah, one to get them out from under the oppression of Rome. By the way, Satan intends on producing in these end times a nationalistic Messiah, the anti-christ who will claim to relieve the immediate and earthly problems of the world.
3. The jews also had no concept of forgiveness of sins free and unconditional by God. Repentance for them meant to turn away from whatever sin that the person was committing. Repentance was works oriented , but Jesus offered a two fold deal: Jesus welcomed people to the Kingdom of God and forgave them of their sins...this concept was unheard of before His appearance and therefore contrary to rabbinical teaching.
these are just a few things that i learned...there are many many more in this volume. the bottom line is that Jesus came and preached a whole new religion to the people. It was very contrary to the modern way of thought..He sought to break the people away from their traditional ideas and ways and to introduce Truth to them.
This is where modern religion is at this point as well. Will people continue to cling to traditionalism and their ritualistic comfortable beliefs or go out on a limb and seek Truth from the one and only source--Jesus Christ...the non-denominational, non new age pure unadulterated biblical only Jesus.

Wonderful, inspirational reading, historically accurate!

I have the hardbound volume in my personal library and am delighted to add this to my Kindle Fire. This marvelous volume of Edersheim's works should be a part of every serious student of the Bible and Christianity. It dovetails nicely with his other works about the Temple and Judaism, filling in the gaps left by the writers of the gospels. Study of this volume will show the daily life of the average citizen of Palestine in Jesus' time, and focuses especially on Jesus himself! No minister should be without this book!

Great Book!

This book is wonderful for anyone wanting more detail about Jesus, the Apostles etc.... And the fact that Edersheim was a former Orthodox Jew meant that he was a very well trained scholar and teacher of the scriptures. The book is very meaty with lots of details, but it thoroughly fills in the background of Jesus' day and also teaches a good deal about Judaism. I would highly recommend it for any seminary student.
