and more better technology would have been controlled by the Communists DURING ...
By George Hutchins
In spite of what crimes the regime committed, influenced others to commit, or allowed others to commit, making a final stand in Berlin: April 16, 1945 - May 2, 1945, assisted NATO to win the COLD WAR, following World War Two.

World War Two may have lasted longer if the regime would have made a final stand in South Germany Berchtesgaden, but more populations would have come under Communist Rule, and more better technology would have been controlled by the Communists DURING THE COLD WAR, if, the Germans had not delayed the Soviet Army by defending Berlin, which allowed time for more populations and Technologies to reach the west during this LAST BATTLE, of World War Two Europe.

The Old Men, the young Boys, and foreign volunteers who defended Berlin during 1945 against the Red Army, felt they were defending the West Against a Communist Invasion, as following Generations had Fought Communists in Many Forms, during the COLD WAR: 1946-1992.

Still relevant and a fascinating read
By Bradley Nelson
I was somewhat skeptical about reading a 50-year-old book on a 70-year-old topic, but this book is still highly relevant and still a very fascinating read. Even in the light of more recent histories (notably Anthony Beevor's Berlin 1945 and Ian Kershaw's The End), this book still has much to offer.

Ryan's focus is actually quite broad, covering the internal dilemmas of the Nazi leadership, the western Allies, and the Soviets, as well as the experiences of Berliners themselves. Much of the anecdotes and accounts are riveting and stunning glimpses into just how this last battle was fought. German commanders like Guderian and Heinrici were bluntly subordinate to Hitler's delusional commands during the final months. Eisenhower was cryptic about his own strategic plans, often frustrating his own generals like Montgomery and Bradley. Stalin manipulated his own marshals Zhukov and Konev to encourage the rapid fall of Berlin.

The civilians themselves offer a telling glimpse of the horrors experienced by the Berlin population. Many became desensitized to death in the final weeks as their own infants, their neighbors, and others died around them. The desperate fear of the Soviets is palpable and made real with the occupation of Red Army soldiers who rape, pillage, and plunder.

The book is a great narrative history, using personal stories and experiences to tell the larger story. Even with more recent scholarship on the topic, this is still a necessary and pleasant read. Unlike the works of Beevor, Kershaw, Hastings, and others, this book is much more approachable for the average reader. Even with little familiarity of WWII or the fall of Berlin, this is a good read for anyone with an interest in the topic. Highly recommended.

A WWII must read story
By Got Book!
I read the "A bridge too far" and enjoy so much of CR war reporting style. In the last battle, CR did it again with the battle preparation, how the internal politics of the Allied forces played out, and how desperate the 3rd Reich last day looked like. Reading this book, one would wonder how the cold war would be different if the US and British forces were the first in Berlin , instead of the USSR. After all, the US force was 50 miles to Berlin.
