Introducing Wyoming’s Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix original series LONGMIRE
Fans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times bestselling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming’s Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, and full of memorable characters. After twenty-five years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire’s hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.
With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

A strong sense of place, a credible plot and deft dialogue lift Johnson's good-humored debut novel, the first of a new series, set in Bighorn Mountain country. Walt Longmire, the veteran sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyo., usually has little to do on his patrols. When Cody Pritchard is found shot to death near the Cheyenne reservation, everyone, including Deputy Victoria Moretti, a transplanted Philadelphian, believes he died in an accident. But two years earlier, Cody was one of four high schoolers convicted of raping a young Native American girl. All were given suspended sentences, and when another of the four turns up dead, it appears that someone is out for revenge. As fear mounts, Sheriff Longmire feels tension in the air between the white population and the Native American community, and he's not pleased to think that his lifelong friend, Henry Standing Bear, might be directly involved in the murders. While the prose could stand tautening at times simply to up the suspense, Johnson has made an assured start that should appeal to a wide range of mystery fans.

The Cold Dish, a multilayered whodunit mystery, stands out in its genre. Shades of racism, mysticism, and revenge give the novel nuance; dead-on dialogue, good-natured humor, and flesh-and-blood characters, including the foul-mouthed deputy Victorian "Vic" Moretti, give it life. Johnson, who lives in Ucross, Wyoming, knows the Western landscape well, and creates stunning and violent scenes (including a raging blizzard) of the Rocky Mountains. Only The Philadelphia Inquirer faulted the novel’s roughness and comparatively immature prose. The other critics look forward to reading more from Johnson’s powerful voice and reconnecting with his eccentric mélange of characters.

'The Cold Dish' is a gem of a first novel
By C. Palmer
Discovering a wonderful new author is a special treat for readers, and Craig Johnson's 'The Cold Dish' is especially delicious. Set in a fictional small town in northern Wyoming and featuring grieving, 50-something widower Sheriff Walt Longmire, the book is a beautifully crafted mystery that will hold your attention from the first page. A marvelous supporting cast of eccentric locals including Longmire's best friend, Henry Standing Bear, both assist and hinder the Sheriff as he makes his way through a maze of suspects to solve a grisy series of murders. By the last chapter of this terrific first novel, the reader will feel that he, too, knows the starkly beautiful country at the foot of the Big Horn mountains. A guaranteed great read!

A Fascinating Contrast to the Longmire TV Series
By Ronald Walker
I must confess at the outset that I am currently reading "The Cold Dish" but have not yet quite finished it. So what I say here must be regarded as incomplete and provisional. I love the tv series (in progress) based on the Longmire novels and am I'm enjoying the novel very much as well. Of course, as the first published book in the series, it spends quite a bit of space introducing characters who will reappear in subsequent volumes, such as Henry Standing Bear, Vic the transplanted deputy, Ferg her gofer counterpart, Ruby the feisty receptionist/dispatcher in the sheriff's office, and so on. These preliminary sketches, while undoubtedly necessary, do tend to slow down the progress of the story, which concerns a rape and murder involving one of the Native American girls living on the Cheyenne reservation in Absaroka County, Wyoming, where the series is lovingly set. Of course the most crucial character is the lawman, Walt Longmire, who is not only the focal personage but--and here is the most important difference between the novel and the tv series--the first-person narrator. This difference is telling because Walt on the screen is a man of very few words indeed, and this fact makes his nonverbal means of expression primary. As the narrator, Walt must provide his unspoken thoughts and observations, offering us a more subjective, interior response to the world than is attempted by the tight-lipped Walt of the tv series. Yet it works very well in both media, and comparing them makes for fascinating study.

A Challenging set of Relationships!
By S J Perrott
This the first book I read by Craig Johnson. It was also the first book he wrote, so I am sure it has been well reviewed by now. I heard him speak in person shortky after finishiging the book.. He is a very amusing and enjoyable speaker, and he was touting new books of course. I am sure I will read more.
I would have checked two words about the mood. I would have added "dark" if the selection softward would have allowed that.
Craig Johnson seems to be very good with complex plots. I got a little twisted up, but I was straighened out as was the the plot in the end. Longmire is the county sheriff. There are complex relationships with women he works with, and with another woman, as well as a Native American bar owner who should be in law enforcement. they both have relationships with three young men who were found guilty of rape but not severyly punished. Some people are seeking revenge for what many consider a miscarriage of justice. More relationships are explored in this situation. Longmire has been a widower for about five years. He also has a relationship with his house, which is kind of a sub plot in the book. He comes into possession of a special weapon in the book with which he develops a relationship as well. This may all sound strange and it is, but it all moves along well except of one dream sequence that is too long, as far as I am concerned. Given the oddness of the cast of characters, Johnson does a masterful job of weaving it all together. I was very surprised at the end. It is a good and challenging read!
About two months before, I had had heard the other Wyoming author, C J Box, who writes about a game warden, Joe Pickett. They are both great speakers, highly recommended if you get the chance to hear either one.
